Drag-and-Drop Desktop Printing
Mac OS X gives you a way to print a document without opening an application. Basically, all you have to do is drag-and-drop a document to print it. This feature can print many kinds of documents, including PDFs, text, images, Word, Excel, Pages, and Numbers.
Setting up drag-and-drop printing in Mac OS X is easy. First, open System Preferences (select System Preferences in the Apple menu). Click Print & Fax (in the second row) to display its settings.

You will see a list of printers your Mac knows about. Drag one to the Desktop. You will see an icon appear on the Desktop that represents the printer. That's it. You're ready to print.
Drag a document onto the printer icon. A single copy of the document will be printed.
There is a downside to printing this way. You don't have to launch and application, but you are not presented with the print window you would normally see, either. Which means you can't specify settings like multiple copies, page range or orientation.
Still, printing from the Mac OS X Desktop is very convenient for much of your printing needs.
