How to Facebook Chat in iChat

Mac users can chat with Facebook friends using iChat, without being logged-in to Facebook in a web browser. If you already use iChat to communicate with friends via other chat services (like AIM or Jabber), you can add Facebook and do all your chatting in one application.

Setting up iChat to include Facebook Chat is fairly easy:

  • In iChat, select "Preferences" from the iChat menu.
  • Click on the “Accounts” toolbar icon to display chat account information.
  • Click "+" (at then bottom-left of the settings window). An Account Settings pane will open.
  • Next, select "Jabber Account" from the “Account Type” menu, select “Jabber”.
  • In the Account Name field, enter "<username>@chat.facebook.com", where "<username>" is your Facebook Username. (You can find your Username on the Account Settings page on the Facebook web site.)

  • Enter your Password.
  • Finally, under “Server Options”, enter "chat.facebook.com" for the Server and "5222" for the Port.
  • Click Done.

An iChat window will open showing all your Facebook friends who are currently online. Now, you can send and receive Facebook chats in iChat.  :-)
