iPad iBooks - Dictionary, Search and Bookmark Features

Reading digital versions of books in the iPad iBooks app offers convenience features not possible in paperbacks or hardbacks.

Get the definition of a word instantly from the built-in dictionary. Search an entire book for a word or phrase and quickly jump to a page with the reference. Bookmark any word, phrase, paragraph or page.

To use the Dictionary, Search and Bookmark features of the iPad iBooks app, first, touch and hold any word on a page to select it. A menu will pop-up. You can extend the selection by dragging the grab points to include more words.

Dictionary
With a word selected, tap Dictionary. The definition of the word will display.

The dictionary also has definitions for phrases, too (when you select multiple words). For example, the Dictionary has definitions for the word "bring" and the phrase "bring home the bacon."

Search
With one or more words selected, tap Search. iBooks will search the entire book and display a list of pages that reference the word(s). Tapping a reference in the list immediately takes you to the page.

Search is a great way to revisit the conversation of a character earlier in a book, find a quote, and recall the mention of an object or place in a story.

Bookmark
Select a word, phrase or paragraph, then tap Bookmark. The selection is highlighted in yellow and automatically turned into a Bookmark. You can change the color of the highlight by touching and holding the highlighted text and choosing a different color.

To remove a bookmark, touch and hold the bookmarked word(s), then tap Delete.
