Share Large Files via the Internet Using MobileMe iDisk

Occasionally, you might have the need to send a very large file to someone. Some email services limit an attachment size to a maximum of 2 MB, some 5 or 10 MB. MobileMe has a fairly large attachment size limit: 20 MB. Still, that may not be large enough to share an iMovie of the kids' graduation, or transfer a very large, high-resolution Photoshop file.

Well, if you have MobileMe account, you can use MobileMe iDisk to share files (large or small) over the Internet. iDisk file sharing lets you email a link to the file you want to share, so that only the people to whom you send the link can access the file.

Copy the File to Your iDisk
Launch Safari (or FireFox) and go to the web page, www.me.com/idisk. Log in, if you need to. You'll see a list of your iDisk folders.

Click the Documents folder. Then, click the Upload button (the one with the arrow in a circle). A window will open. Click "Choose..." to locate and select the file you want to share. Your file will begin to upload to your iDisk. When it has finished uploading, you will see it listed in the Documents folder.

Share the File
Click on the file in your Documents folder. Information about the file will display. Now, click the "Share File..." button. Another window will slide open.

To send an email with a link to the file, type an email address into the “Send this link to” field, and type a message. If you like, you can assign a password that will have to be used to gain access to the file. (Do not use your actual MobileMe password!) You can also choose to have the link expire after a period of time. When you're ready, click the Share button.

Now, added to the file's information, you'll see that the file is being shared and you'll see the file's shared URL. Give this URL to anyone you want to share the file with. You can send another email from MobileMe to someone else you want to share the file with by clicking the "Sharing Options..." button.
