iPhone Voice Dialing

When your hands aren't entirely free, you can dial a phone number by voice on your iPhone (iPhone 4 or 3GS).

Hold Down the Home Button
Hold down the Home button for 3 seconds. (If you have the iPhone earphones plugged-in, squeeze and hold the center button on the earphones cord.)

Speak a Phone Number or Name
The Voice Control screen will open. Now, you can say "Dial 555-1234" or "Call 555-1234". Or, you can speak names that are in Contacts on your iPhone, "Dial Shelley" or "Dial Shelley mobile" (if you have more than one phone number for Shelley).

Works even when iPhone is Sleeping
You can bring up Voice Control dialing even when your iPhone is asleep and locked. You don't have to wake it up. Just hold down the Home button for 3 seconds and talk.

How to Make Text Larger in iPhone 4 Apps: Contacts, Mail, Messages and Notes

The iPhone 4 Retina display is remarkably crisp and sharp. Still, if you read lots of email or send a lot of text messages on your iPhone, the small text can be quite taxing on your eyes.

iOS 4 let's you increase the size of text displayed in iPhone's Mail, Messages, Contacts and Notes apps.

Open Settings and then tap General. Tap Accessibility. You'll see a number of settings. Tap Large Text and choose a text size that's easier for you to read.

Now, when you read or compose email, send a text message, look up contacts or take notes in the iOS 4 apps the larger text size will be used.

Sort iPhone Contacts By First Name

The iPhone, by default, sorts contact names alphabetically by last name. If you prefer, you can have the iPhone sort contacts by first name, instead.

Open Settings and tap "Mail, Contacts, Calendars". Scroll down to the Contacts section and tap "Sort Order". Then, tap "First, Last".

You may have noticed the Display Order setting (below Sort Order). This is used to determine if names are displayed first name first ("John Hancock") or last name first ("Hancock John").
